Rebecca Rousseau

We are excited to celebrate Expressionism through the Art of Rebecca Rousseau!  Expressionism is a modernist movement, initially in poetry and painting, originating in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century. Its typical trait is to present the world solely from a subjective perspective, distorting it radically for emotional effect in order to evoke moods or ideas (Wikipedia).  Other famous Expressionist artists are Henri Matisse, Franz Marc, and pieces like The Scream by Edvard Munch.

Rebecca Rousseau is an Expressionistic painter, preferring to paint true emotions over true form.  A former Type A – East Coaster, she now lives her better years communing with paint and nature in Story, WY.  Her inspiration is heavily influenced by the aesthetic traditions of Haiti, Mexico, and now Wyoming, which she considers to be the richest inspiration of all.  Rebecca adds that “my current painting process focuses on expressive color and markings tamed with delicate earth tones.  I’m heavily influenced by my past on the Mexican border and the vivid colors used in Latin American painting. It’s more important to me to create the emotion of the creatures or landscape rather than to mimic the exact reality. Life in Wyoming has offered my an array of wildness that feeds my continued need to fill a  canvas with colorful brushstrokes.”

Rebecca is a certified teacher and, after receiving her Bachelor’s in Education from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1990, she taught first grade in El Paso, TX.  She later went on to teach art in her Raleigh, NC community.  Rebecca currently teaches acrylic painting at Sage Community Arts, The Hub on Smith Street, and privately.  She also substitutes in area schools.  Rebecca is in both national and international collections and is active in the local art community.
